Feeling Safer With Tech

3rd November at 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

One of the most important things we try to do at Tech & Tea is to empower people to feel confident using their technology devices. Technology can be incredibly useful and can really enhance our lives. Unfortunately, it seems also like there’s someone ready to scam us around every corner, so this also means that we have to make sure everyone who comes to our Tech & Tea sessions also understands the risks of going online. We run Tech Talks on this topic regularly to ensure everyone knows how to stay safe online and can be confident knowing that what they’re doing is safe (or be able to stop doing something if they could be at risk).

So, what can you expect to learn at this session? Well as always, we try to keep it open and let you ask questions and tell us about your experiences during the talk. However, we’ll also cover these 4 main topics.

Top Tips for Online Safety

How do you know if you’re on a safe website? Are you concerned about doing your banking online, or putting your bank details in to make a purchase? We’ll share all our top tips with you so that you can feel more confident when doing things online.

Antivirus Software?

What is a computer device? What does antivirus software do? Do I need to spend a lot of money to protect my computer?

We found that whenever you go to buy a new laptop or desktop computer, the lovely person selling you the product will also try to sell you some antivirus software. While they are only doing their job, it can be quite misleading and can often leave us thinking we need to buy every antivirus software we can find to protect our computer! But don’t worry, we’ll explain exactly what you need to keep your computer safe and virus free (spoiler alert: it won’t cost you the earth!)

Spam Emails

We’ve all had the email from the Nigerian prince promising us £1m if we transfer all our money to a mysterious bank account, but nowadays not all spam emails are that easy to spot! With scammers now replicating emails from real companies, like Amazon or Apple. Do you know how to spot these fraud emails or what to do if you get an email one? We’ll make sure you know what things to look out for and how to help keep your accounts safe!

Passwords

When was the last time you changed your password? How many passwords are set as default to ‘1234’, or ‘password’ and then never get changed? It’s really important that we have strong passwords and change them regularly, so we’ll give you our best tips for strong passwords (and how to remember them!).

If you want to find out more, check out our Events Calendar to find out when the next ‘Feeling Safer with Tech’ session is. If you’ve been to one of our Tech Talks on this topic, or want to share your experiences on the topic, comment on this post or share your knowledge with others to help our community work better, together.
